Who We Are

The Jewish National Fund Walter Sisulu Environmental Centre (WSEC) opened in September 2004.  Its primary purpose is to raise environmental awareness and provide environmental education to the Mamelodi community and school learners. It runs broad range of hands-on activity-based programmes and projects.

Since its inception, the Centre has hosted thousands of learners every year who have learned about and developed skills in Water, Waste, Energy, Biodiversity and climate change management. WSEC is located in Mamelodi East, in the Tshwane metro, in Gauteng, South Africa on the grounds of the Gauteng Department of Education’s regional teacher centre.

Our History

The JNF Walter Sisulu Environmental Centre was founded by the Jewish National Fund of South Africa and Food & Trees for Africa, who established the Mamelodi Greening Committee to oversee the Greening of Mamelodi. Initial projects included Nelson Mandela Park (opened by President Nelson Mandela in 1996) and the Mandela Park Peace Garden. The original initiative grew into a plan to build the JNF Walter Sisulu Environmental Centre (WSEC) to promote environmental education in Mamelodi.

A steering committee that included Food & Trees for Africa, the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, the Tshwane Metro and Department of Agriculture, Conservation, Environment and Land, the Gauteng Department of Education and the National Environmental Education Programme, was convened to guide the vision and ensure broad community engagement. WSEC was formally opened by Albertina Sisulu in September 2004.

Since then, WSEC has hosted hundreds of thousands of school learners, youth and community members at the Centre and planted over 35 000 trees in Mamelodi.
