The JNF Walter Sisulu Environmental Centre is located in Mamelodi and educates schools and the community towards sustainable living. This is particularly important at a time of increasing concern about over-utilising of resources, a growing population, and climate change.
The buildings of the Centre demonstrate environmentally friendly technology, thermal comfort, natural and energy efficient lighting, natural ventilation, and the use of solar power for heating and cooking.
The Centre consists of an auditorium, administration office, computer room, Water Wise ablution facilities and four environmental theme rooms: Waste, Energy, Water and Biodiversity. The programmes in the Water Wise Room are supported by the Water Wise Education Team from Rand Water.
The permaculture garden serves as our outdoor classroom. Here we grow food and medicinal plants using natural ways of conserving water, fertilising the soil and controlling pests and diseases.
We are a member of Eco Schools and received our International Green Flag in 2010.
